| | All errors and updates are listed below.
Please note we only list changes that were published after the "FIRST
PUBLIC RELEASE", which was build 011. Corporate customers with site
licenses might have different editions of the book with chapters not available
to other customers. The reason for this is explained on my web site.
Build 036: 2008-11-09
 | Chapter 12 - described the Health Check Monitoring File. |
 | Chapter 38 - added section "Miscellaneous OEM Agent Commands".
This stuff was already in the book, but very hard to find. Also, see the new
Chapter 43. |
 | Chapter 41 - all the stuff related to Oracle Text was organized into this
new chapter. |
 | Chapter 43 - all of the miscellaneous utility commands like emctl, srvctl,
and crsctl were consolidated into this one chapter. If I didn't know
where else to put it, then it went into Chapter 43. |

 | In Chapter 7 added overviews of Oracle Streams and Oracle Data Guard to
the section "Description of Core Features and Options". |
 | In Chapter 15 were it stated "Oracle does not support SSL to the database when using a JDBC Thin driver",
this is only true for Oracle 10.1 and earlier. A new feature of
Oracle 10.2 is support for SSL connections over JDBC Thin driver. Good luck
meeting all pre-requisites and setting it up correctly. |
 | In Chapter 17 "Solaris" the operating system requirements were
updated, and we documented the process of listing and adjusting the maximum
number of processes on Solaris. |
 | In chapter 18 "init params" we added notes and tips to the
following parameters: COMPATIBLE, SGA_MAX_SIZE, and SGA_TARGET. The
description of LOG_BUFFER in Oracle 10.2 was clarified. |
 | In Chapter 29 "Flashback" added descriptions of all standard
directories found in the FRA. Actually these are notes pulled together
from various other parts of the book, but now it is a lot easier to get the
info. |
 | Corrections to discussion of schemas WK_TEST and WKSYS. |
 | Corrections in the chapter on Migration pertaining to Oracle Streams. |
 | Clarifications in the discussions of private and public database links. |

I didn't think anyone bothered to use CURRVAL so I did not document it
before. |
 | The section on GATHER_TABLE_STATS was updated with more examples. |
 | The section on GATHER_INDEX_STATS was formatted as Heading 4 but it should
have been Heading 3. This was corrected. |

 | In chapter 2 the examples for creating database links contained hidden
characters that prevented you from copy/pasting them into SQL*Plus.
This has been fixed. |
 | In chapter 11 documented the Oracle background processes PSPn and FMON,
and the Oracle-supplied background process FMPUTL. Also provided a
table that illustrates when each of the most common background processes are
spawned during the startup process; this information was consolidated from
other chapters. |
 | In chapter 16 "Windows Issues" update the chapter on Windows Issues with new 64-bit compatibility
information, the latest information about Windows Vista, and updated
information about memory management. |

Server 2003 was re-organized into its own section. The latest
information from Microsoft and Oracle was incorporated into the book. |

EXCLUSIVE command. This had been loosely discussed in the chapter on
RAC. |
 | In chapter 26 "The Recycle Bin" updated the section "Clearing the Recycle Bin". |

Database with SSL". |
 | In chapter 33 "SQL*Plus" added the section "Accepting User
Input". |

 | The PDF file's properties says Build 026. Please update to correct
build number. |
 | In the section "Flashback Database Log Files" added a quick
formula for estimating storage space requirements. The only formula
provided by Oracle requires that you already be using Flashback Database for
a while, and let Oracle calculate running averages. My new formula
assumes you are not yet using Flashback Database and therefore cannot use
Oracle's formula. |
 | In chapter 6 (New Features) documented the DML Error Logging feature,
which is new in 10.2. |
 | In chapter 6 (New Features) documented the SQL*Plus Proxy User Login
feature, which is new in 10.2. |

inability to export audit trail data (or any other data from dictionary
schemas), and an example of how to initiate exports from within PL/SQL
blocks. Also elaborated on the Master Control Table. |
 | Documented a change in the AUD$ table: column TIMESTAMP# has been
obsoleted and is no longer populated, so you should be using the new column
NTIMESTAMP#. |

"Hiding Your Identity". |
 | Pages 132 and 133 on PostgreSQL were updated. |
 | The description of the Sun T2000 was enhanced. |
 | The certification matrix for Oracle RAC on Vertias SF/RAC was updated. |
 | In the chapter about ASM a note was made about Symantec offerig a free
"Basic Edition" of Veritas Storage Foundation for Windows, Linux,

expanded upon. Also, additional information was added to the
discussions of tables, indexes, constraints, and views. |
 | Chapter 2 was also updated as all
information about External Tables (scattered throughout the book) was
consolidated into one easy to read section. |
 | In the chapter on DataPump, the examples at the end of the chapter were
clarified and expanded upon. Also, added notes about taking consistent
exports in DataPump, and added notes about the fact that tablespaces do not
get imported from full exports when using schema-level imports, causing many
imports to fail. |
 | In the chapter on Upgrades and Migrations, updated the discussion of RMAN
commands DUPLICATE and CONVERT. |
 | In the RMAN chapter: fixed typos in the "connection" examples. One of them had
"connect / connect", for example. Also, updated the discussions of backing up the FRA and
freeing-up space in the FRA. |
 | In the chapter on RMAN: clarified the process of backing up in
NOARCHIVELOG mode; clarified the process of backing up databases when files
expected by RMAN are not present and would normally cause RMAN to fail
(i.e., discussed the SKIP INACCESSIBLE clause); and significantly clarified
the discussion of backing up archived redo logs. |
 | Page 1097, the command CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW 1
DAYS was missing the word OF. It should say "WINDOW OF 1
DAYS". |

many hints from Oracle that Streams is replacing AR, there is still no end
date for AR. In fact, AR still exists in Oracle 11x. |
 | The chapter on RMAN makes more clear how to configure OEM Database Control
to work with your RMAN recovery catalog and target databases. |
 | The chapter on DataPump makes more clear how to use the NETWORK_LINK
parameter. |
 | Cross-references (hyperlinks) were added on the first page of each
chapter. These links go to the top-level
sections in the chapter. However, these links are only useful in .DOC
files, not PDF files. This is due to
technical limitations of our PDF generation software, PdfFactory Pro. |
Build 024 - 2006-12-04
 | Updated several sections where Oracle Managed Files and/or the Flash
Recovery Area are discussed to be more clear. Edits were made on pages

 | In the section RMAN and the Flash Recovery Area, added an example of
configuring Oracle to write backups to the FRA. |
 | Created section "Using RMAN to Reclaim Space in the FRA" on page
1,016. |
 | It was noted there are two sections in Chapter 11 to discuss the same
