The book is about Oracle's flagship database software, version 10g. It started as a complete discussion of how to create a database using the SQL command CREATE DATABASE. There are so many interesting things about this one command related to extent management, segment space management, defaults, passwords, and more. Creating a database from scratch requires some knowledge of Oracle's SQL*Plus application, so that became another chapter. You cannot create a database until you install software, so that became a chapter. You cannot install software unless you know what software is available and what software you will need or want to do your job, so that all became another chapter. Eventually, I ran out of pre-requisite concepts and started writing about things you could do after creating the database. These topics include job scheduling, partitioning, network load balancing, and a lot more. To make the book complete, there is a very lengthy discussion of new features in both Oracle 10g Release 1 and Release 2, as well as the new Express Edition of the software. This question is answered in the first part of the book. To summarize, Oracle and other vendors offer you the raw ingredients and it is up to you to make something. If you got a bag of nuts, could you make soup? There are literally thousands of things you might want to consider while cooking up a database. How do I order the book on CD? Availability of the book on CD-ROM is determined by our reseller. Please consult their web site. What versions of Oracle are covered? Oracle 10.1.0.2 through 10.1.0.4, and Oracle 10.2.0.1 through 10.2.0.3. The book's examples were tested using the Enterprise Edition. We also describe the Personal, Standard, Standard One, and the new Express Editions. What operating systems are covered? The book was not written to be platform specific. Oracle 10g runs on so many operating systems and hardware platforms, and the book tries not to promote or indicate a preference for any particular operating system or hardware vendors. That said, the book was largely written on a computer running Microsoft Windows XP Professional with an Intel 650j processor and ASUS P5ADE-Premium motherboard. The book does have a vary large discussion of Microsoft Windows-specific things like registry keys and services. There is also a chapter dedicated to Sun Solaris to discuss shells, profiles, environment variables, kernel parameters, and more. There are no chapters in this book dedicated to Linux, AIX, or HP-UX. There is really no need to do so, because once you learn SQL*Plus or how to partition a table, the commands are identical on all operating systems and hardware platforms. We publish "builds" of the book from time-to-time. An errata sheet lists the changes that were incorporated into each build of the book. To see the errata sheet click here. Will a revised book be released? Yes, the book will be updated based on user feedback, internal reviews, and it will be expanded to include new information. All customers will be notified when the updated book is available, and the conditions thereof. Generally, the updated versions of the eBook are available to existing customers at no cost other than shipping, when applicable. To receive a free updated copy of the book, the customer must provide the seller with an email address to which the eBook can be delivered as an attachment. Please keep in mind that most mail servers will not allow attachments over 8-10 MB, and this eBook is nearly 20 MB. Sure, but at this time the book is only available in electronic format. There is no guarantee a paper edition will ever be available. It's up in the air right now, and totally depends on customer demand for a printed copy of the book, which I don't anticipate given my wonderful experiences with electronic books. If the time comes it work like this ... Customers will be notified a paper edition is available, and the monies paid for electronic copy will be credited towards the same book in paper copy. Printed books have additional shipping and handling charges. Is there a money back guarantee, or what is the return policy? Yes, of course! I am positive this book has what you are looking for.
